    Utilakilt in airports

...anyone wear a Utilikilt through the security at an airport yet? What with all those steel snaps holding things together I'm wondering how the ATA security handled it?

all they do is wand you. no big deal. All the other passengers stare at you while this is going on and the other security guards have a good chuckle at the poor sod who has to check you out. Other than that it's not a problem...takes all of 15 seconds extra time.

Recently wore a Utilikilt (original) from San Francisco to New York and back. Nylon belt with plastic buckle. Emptied the pockets before entering the scanner. The snaps never triggered any alarm. No looks or comments from the TSA folks.

This is off-topic, but I can't help remember: I once had a safety pin in my shirt pocket. The censors in Belfast and Heathrow failed to catch it, but the censors at Dulles (Washington DC) caught it. I just dropped it into a little tray and then collected it on the other side of the X-Ray machine!

Not quite a Utilikilt, but I have often been through airports in Europe wearing a denim Union kilt which also has lots of studs and snaps and I have not had any problems. Had to empty the pockets and put the belt through the x-ray (be sure to wear a kilt which will stay up without a belt) and been wanded and frisked a few times but the kilt has never caused me any delay or embarrassment.

Ugh. Tried it once with my UK. Never again. DFW airport scanners went haywire with all the metal snaps. Had to get wanded, and obviously the DFW TSA employees have never seen a kilt before. They didn't quite know how to handle it. I can laugh about it now, but was frustrating at the time.

Depends on the airport. Flown out of Cincinnati many times, and a UK original sets off the detector. Just got wanded, no big deal.

Flown out of Newark and Scranton, and walked through in a workman's and didn't set anything off.

Yeah, some airport detectors catch the metal snaps, some don't.

Which really doesn't do a lot to bolster my sense of safety.

C'est la vie. Haven't flown kilted yet... Yet.

....well, the issue is probably moot anyway. I wore the kilt again today and don't like the way it hangs. LOML tells me I look llike I'm wearing a limp tu-tu, so I doubt I'd be wearing it on the trip. Probably put it on ebay.
