A great comedian that made people think died Sunday;

my favorite skit was a place for my stuff.

George Carlin's infamous skit about profanity on TV wound up before the Supreme Court and became a landmark case. The justices decided he was indecent, but not obscene, for using profane words, and Carlin became a footnote in legal history. The comedian best known for those seven words banned from airwaves dies Sunday.

Heartbroken - George Carlin was a master of language and a great comedian. I for one will miss his humor and his honesty.

It certainly was a shock to me as well, he was in the news just last week as he was to be presented with the Mark Twain Award for humor.

Regret I never saw him live.

I will always remember his comparison between Baseball and Football...

In football the object is for the quarterback, also known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! - I hope I'll be safe at home!

I was truly shocked when I heard about George Carlin's passing on CNN this morning. He had an unmeasurable impact on the comedy world. In the last decade or so I found his performances to be a bit too "ranting" for my taste in funny but I grew up on his comedy and will miss hearing his opinions. RIP George.

I too found his more recent work more like rantings than comedy, but his early comedy is priceless! I grew up in the 70's listening to his albums and I really regret not seeing him live when I had the chance. His ability to use the English language was incredible. Not all of his humour was profane.
Godspeed, George. We're gonna miss you.

The guy had a wit that was unmatched. He could take a comedy routine that makes you laugh also cause you to think about how we look at things. Rest in peace George....

As a linguist, I loved his use of and attention to the English language. As a wanna-be comedian I loved his sense of humor.

For the record, he was of Irish descent. If only we'd sent him an Irish National tartan kilt...
