You know you're in Canada when...

OK we've all been complaining about the cold and snow(except for a couple of Xmarkers from Alberta). I just received these pics today in an email titled "You know you're in Canada when..." It's from a neighbourhood in Sylvain Lake in Alberta.

I can say this because my Partner is Canadian.....

You know you're in Canada when no one cares what your hair looks like because EVERYONE is wearing a toque. (Or would it be touque?)

You know you're in Canada when you realize that the sky has been grey for three months and thats GOOD weather.

You know you're in Canada when you are going out and you say "Let me put my on Chesterfield" and everyone else wonders if you are wearing the living room sofa out to a pub...

And you really know you're in Toronto when you wonder just why there are so many Queen Street exits off the Gardiner Expressway! We've finally gotten so we know to go to the end of the Gardiner until we turn. (Unless the traffic is bad....then get off as early as possible.


(Disclaimer: I'm from the USA, my Partner is Canadian and I LOVE Canada. We go there several times a year. I don't live there but its my adopted country nontheless. Just move it down near Mexico for the weather and I'M THERE! )


PS. Put a hockey rink in the backyard and I'll throw the party!!!

oh...and a tuke (which should really be spelled toque) is a knit beanie type ski hat, for all those that didn't know.

And you really know you're in Toronto when you wonder just why there are so many Queen Street exits off the Gardiner Expressway! We've finally gotten so we know to go to the end of the Gardiner until we turn. (Unless the traffic is bad....then get off as early as possible.

Well first off there's Brown's line, Kipling (To IKEA), Islington, Parkside, Lakeshore (As the name suggests), Jamison, (Gets you to the CNE) Spadina (Gets you to the CN Tower and The Rogers Centre Sky Dome), Young and York (To the downtown core and Bay street), Jarvis(Downtown, DVP (gets you back north to the 401 then the 416 to Ottawa for the worlds largest rink!!) and then the end of the Gardiner. Queen runs parallel with the Gardiner.
However you can get onto the Gardiner from The QEW (Queen Elizabeths' Way)
That's what I remember from my last commute. tongue in cheek whilst wearing a toque....cheers just a razzin ya mate!!

I've taken many of those Queen St. exits and can't recall ever driving on Queen St. Couldn't tell you what one actually gets you there.

And on to Canadian weather, we are moving closer to two seasons. Cold and hot. It use to be cold and snow but we just don't get the snow anymore. Buffalo and NY state just a few hours south of us here in Fergus got 10 times the snow we've had all winter in 4 days. Does everyone across the border in NY state live in Igloos. How the tide has turned.
Hot being tropical, humid South Carolina hot. Poor David R Ross comes to our highland games every two years and almost dies from the heat. He wrote in one of his books about it and could not believe anyone of Scottish decent could survive the climate here.
We use to have a cool fall gently leading into the winter. And a cool spring leading into summer. The gap has closed and it seem like it's hot, then it's cold.

Times have changed.

You know your in Canada when you get the urge to go fishing and it takes six hours just to cut a hole in the ice big enough to get your boat in.

You know your in Canada when your teenager asks for a ski-doo instead of a car 'cause although you can't make out in the back seat of a ski-do at least you can get to the date with one.

You know your in Canada when each of your neighbors has an uncle who once went out to shovel the driveway and has never been seen again.

You know your from Canada when you take a vacation down to the US and you remark to your wife, "Look honey they have trees, and they come in GREEN!"

I knew I'd been in Canada too long when my brother commented, "If'n ya don'd mine me sa'yn, y'all talk funny nowadays."

Its the cold wind up my kilt that alerts me to the fact that I am still in Canada.
