Hello from Sherman Texas
I work in technical theater at a local playhouse. I wear my kilt to every call. (call is the term for a work day, usually preceeded with the type of call. Crew call is a scheduled workday for the set crew, Light call is a work day for the light designer and that crew and so on...) I have two kilts. my work and play kilt is a Utilikilt workman, my dress kilt is an Amerikilt. Both in Black. Haven't tracked down an appropriate tartan yet.

Nothing wrong with a solid colored kilts, nothing at all...
Though if you ever think you are going to wear a kilt socially out-and-about, the tartan kilt, sporran, hose and flashes can help make it clear that you are in kilt vs skirt.
