Hiya - Dumb question??

Probably a question you maybe sick of hearing, but I want to buy my first kilt and am wondering about the measurements.
All the requirements, except for some casual kilts, say you should measure around your belly button (waist). I don't want to wear braces and know from experience with pants that it will just fall down!! I don't want to look a complete burk when I go out for the first time in a kilt. Any suggestions?
Also, does anyone know where I can get my own tarten woven?
Any help would be gratefully received.

Its really not a dumb question, it's better to ask now than not ask and come out with the wrong size, your experience with pants will not have as much bearing as you might think. Kilts by nature are somewhat snug, if you are measured properly you wont need braces, one good resource for measurements is here:

All of the kilt vendors have directions on how to measure for their kilts. Check their websites for the instructions.

A 13 or 16 oz 8 or 9 yard traditional kilt is measured at the navel, they are worn high. Trust us, if they are correctly measured at the proper kilt waist line they will stay up.

If you're going to get a custom tartan go with our own M.A.C. Newsome. Remember though each kilt maker measures slightly differently than the next. If you're like 99.9999% of kilt wearers your waist is smaller than your hips besides a kilt is engineered to stay up. Welcome to XMarks from southern Ontario.

Welcome to Xmarks, and although I have a bit of a middle aged spread, a properly measured kilt will stay up fine.

Measure how they say, and it will be fine. Kilts are generally worn a bit higher than trousers, which tend to be between navel & hips.
There are no 'dumb questions' on this site, and one learns a great deal of stuff. Everyone is very helpful (Thanks again Mc Murdo!) I find myself checking this out daily. It's almost as addictive as Kilting! Welcome!

Kilts are measured to fit snug (not tight) so they will stay up fine. So, when measuring, be sure to measure it snug, and not with any slack in the measuring tape.
