    Kiltmaking in Idaho

    Hello All,

I am here on a quest to make kilts for my husband and brother in law. I found you all by Googling "how to make a kilt", and found Alan H's excellent X-Kilt manual.

The kilts I will be making are contemporary, Utilikilt-style. I have my brother in law's UK to study and have successfully duplicated it (sans pockets) in broadcloth, just to learn the construction. And boy, have I learned a lot already! I am a pretty accomplished seamstress, but this is half sewing and half engineering.

Now that I have the steps of construction under my (kilt) belt, I am running into the problems of fit. I need to learn more about "the beer gut cut" and wish Steve's book would be published already!

Thank you all for the information I have already gleaned from this site - I am very impressed by y'alls sewing!

Hello and welcome from Ohio. For additional information another option is to get the book "The Art of Kilt Making" by Barb Tewksbury (a member of this forum). It is available through the Scottish Tartan's Museum gift shop, in a link near the top of this page.
