Genealogical research is a vast, time consuming, and addictive project. Usually the advice is to first talk to the oldest memebers of your family for all they can give you.

I would suggest looking into a recently published book on genealogy, especially on research in Canada and other areas you are interested in. The accessibilty of resources and databases is always changing, and usually for the better.

What gilmore said is a great start.

Also, interview and get info from everyone older than you in your family. Write or record everything. Be very precise on dates and locations. Birthdates, marrage dates, death, baptism and anything else you may or may not think is important. Little bits of info should be treated as gold.

Also, get in touch with your local LDS church. They usually have a Family Resource Center available to anyone, even if you're not Mormon. I've found them to be very helpful and passionate about this stuff. And, the fees and stuff are very resonable, but plan on spending long hours there, plugging in names and winding through microfiche.

    Good luck!

    T.
