In market for second kilt, help!

Hey guys, been a while since I last been on here. I currently own a Stillwater Black Watch kilt. I am looking to get a new kilt, possibly from USA kilts. My budget is $300 or less. Any suggestions = awesome.

Under $300 I'd say USAK or Skye Highland Outfitters in that price range. A traditional style PV will run about 200-275 with shipping and depending on other factors, or you could get 2 casual models from either company for that. Just depends on what you want to do with it--everyday wear, special occasions, formal, pub crawl, golf, highland games. Both companies have a good selection of tartans and they both have awesome service and will answer any questions you have. I've emailed both more than once and got a response within in a couple of hours!

USAK's website has a pretty good page that can help guide you. In the menu on the left go down to "Important Info" and check out the FAQ's, Things To Consider, and What Kilt Is Right For Me.

Of course the people here on these forums are a great source as well.

And the for sale section of this site has some really good deals from time to time. Keep an eye on that. Every time I go a week without checking it I miss something good!

If you want a wool kilt, your price range puts you in the market for a good casual kilt, as well.

Our 13 oz (medium weight) casual kilts are $295, and if you can afford to go just a little higher than your stated range, many heavy weight tartans (16 oz) are available for just $305.

Our casual kilts are made from the exact same quality worsted wool that our standard kilts are made from, woven by Scottish mills (Lochcarron, House of Edgar, etc). The only difference is that the casual kilts use about half the cloth, so you get fewer pleats. We've also recently switched to hand stitching on all of our casual kilts.

It's a great option for someone looking for a kilt that won't break the budget, yet wants the quality wool material and hand craftsmanship as typically seen in a much more expensive kilt.

Are you looking for another Blackwatch kilt? or a different tartan? If you let us know what tartan you are looking for we may be able to help you out.

We have some casual kilts on sale in various tartans at all three weights: 10, 13 and 16 ounce. These are made with 100% wool from Lochcarron of Scotland. Great kilt when on a budget priced at only $199.99 cdn.

Give us some feedback on the tartan you are looking for and if you are looking for a full 8 yard or 4 yard kilt. Also are you looking at PV or Wool?

I would agree with this. I think PV is your best bet, although you can get an 8 yard machine stitched from Skye for only 299.00. You are limited in the tartans:

As far as a PV I know skye is an 8 yard pv and will run 189.99, in any size. I have one it is an awesome kilt. E-mail him about shipping and he might be able to help you with it.

USAK PV is only 6.5 -7 yards (depending on your size) is going to run between 219.00 (for smaller guys) and 239.00 for medium size guy (I fit this price range and my waist is 37).

Pretty easy to compare, I think. I will admit I am biased and prefer Skye. I promise you won't be dissapointed and will probably get your kilt faster, without paying a fee.

If you want a sure thing at this stage I'd support the USA Kilts semi-trad recommendation.

I live up in Page, AZ and have owned 25 USA kilts with a semi-trad on order. Why? Quality for sure, beauty for sure, but also because the Polyviscose material stays cool in the desert heat. We're only about five degrees cooler than Phoenix up here.

Do stay away from middlemen and work direct with a kiltmaker - gets more mileage from your dinero. And, I'd recommend going with a proven kiltmaker rather than a start up and your jones will be shorter if you select a full time kiltmaker.

But its your money and your kilt, follow your heart.

Whoever you select you can have any two of price, quality, or service.

I would say go with the USA Casual, you will have $200 left over for a nice sporran, hose, etc, than if you had gone with the most budget-filling option....

Heck - get TWO USA Kilts casuals for the money.

Only caveat I would have is my own experience. I started out with USA Kilts Casuals then risked a semi-trad. Once I strapped on a semi-trad I was so hooked I sold off many of my casuals to have them replaced with semi-trads.

Saved a few casuals for jaunts into hot humid weather...but semi-trads are what I choose from USA Kilts...of course I'm an olde geezer too. If you're young and frisky and just knocking around a casual or two would fit.

It really doesn't matter...you're gonna get more addicted and buy a lot more kilts...

For $300, I'd say go with either the aforementioned Skye Highland Outfitters, or TartanWeb standard kilt. You can get either in 16 oz. wool, 8-yard knife pleated for that price.
