    new from Central oregon

    Hello to all,

I am just beginning to get interested in kilts and was recommended by a good friend. I am a bespoke boot and shoemaker from Central Oregon.

I am descended from Irish Sweeney's who, from what I understand, were displaced MacSweens. I have read where all Sweeneys are supposedly descended from, or related to that original stock.

so now I am looking for a kilt.

Sad to say I don't like too many of the bright coloured kilts and I am none too fond of the MacQueen tartan (no offense, lads).

I actually like the Ulster 1196 (peat) tartan but I think the MacSweens settled in Donegal after they were driven out of Argyll by Robert the Bruce.

Similar tarans the MacKenzie Htg. and Fitzsimmons Htg. --as you can see it's black and tan I'm liking. I'm studying on a box pleated kilt...maybe, if worse comes to worse, making my own.

Any suggestion or comments would be welcome.

Hello and a warm from the other side of the continent. For kilt ideas, just click on the websites of our advertisers. As far as the history and geography goes.... Donegal is in Ulster. I believe it is the only Ulster county that is not a part of Northern Ireland. It is also a fact that the northern most part of Ireland, Malin Head, is on the Inishowen peninsular, County Donegal, Republic of Ireland. Therefore The Ulster tartan is a good choice.
