    Wanted: One Sporran Strap

GOT IT! Thank you again, Forrester Modern!

I'm not sure if someone has an extra man's black sporran strap, but if you do, let me know. I bought a sporran on eBay and it only came with one strap. Mark loves the sporran and has rigged up a temporary fix, but I would like a proper strap when he goes to the prom. Shops sell them as pairs I've found, and they are a tad expensive. If you have an extra one, let me know how much you want for it. Thanks. --Marks Mom

Are you talking about hangers? They are leather loops that hang off of a belt. Sporran straps are long enough to go all the way around the waist. You can get sporran straps from Stillwater Kilts for $10 to $28.

    Hi Sammac,
What Mark needs is one of the little suspension straps that is a chain with a little strap on it. We are putting together everything he needs, but I haven't purchased the belt or made the kilt yet. I am a total newbie to this so I am not sure what the different parts are called and I may even be a little confused about how the sporran will attach. Mark has so far tied the one chain to his everyday belt and then got a piece of chain from an old pocket watch and tied the other side to his belt. I know we must need two of those chain straps to do it right.

I checked Stillwater's site and I guess I am a pretty confused. If he wears a kilt belt with his kilt and prince charlie jacket, does he clip the sporran to that belt or does he wear an additional sporran belt, too. I had guessed that the sporran just hung from the main kilt belt with two chains. As I look at the pictures on Stillwater, Mark's sporran has half of the sporran belt. It is the half without any sort of buckle and which has the tab with the holes in it. I guess I need to find out more about how this thing is supposed to go together.

Sounds like you've got half a strap and are missing the buckle strap. If so, first action is to contact seller?...

It does sound like you only received half the belt. I'd contact the vendor and ask for the other half.

The other easy fix is to go with the one piece leather sporran belt from Stillwater here

This belt passes all the way around Mark and passes through a pocket on the back of the sporran and fastens to it's own buckle like a belt would but you don't wear it tight like a pants belt. You want a few inches of "sag" in a sporran belt.

If he wants the look of chain go with this

However, make sure your sporran has one of these or at least a pair of drings to attach it to on the back.

    Hi Mark's Mom,

First, let's get one thing straight...A Prince Charlie and matching waistcoat should not be worn with a kilt belt. It is perfectly acceptable (although not my preference) to wear the PC jacket without a waistcoat, and in this case a kilt belt is a fine addition to complete the look.

Now, regarding your question about the sporran belt/strap/chain...From what you described, it sounds like your ebay seller shorted you one-half of the sporran belt/chain. Replacement belts or chains, similar to this one, can be found all over the internet, and are not really expensive.

Some prefer the leather/chain combo, as it is more formal looking, others prefer just leather, as they claim it does less wear damage to the kilt. The choice is yours.

The sporran does have something on the back that has two rings for attaching straps. I think this sporran is perhaps a reproduction of an old horse-hair sporran. It is very heavy and quite a conversation piece. Mark loves it. I bought it for a lot less than I have seen others online, so I didn't think I should bug the seller about the missing strap.
Let me get this straight: For formal attire, should he use a sporran strap with chains AND a wide kilt belt with a big buckle. Is there anything super special about the big belt? Would a normal belt in the right size work? I really appreciate the time and effort you have spent on my questions. Thank you.

I think I understand now. I am planning to make the vest too, so I will only need the sporran belt, which is only $10 online. If for some reason I cannot finish the vest, then I can get the kilt belt to wear with the sporran belt. That's good to know. Thank you so much for all the info. You and the others have been so helpful to me.

Since I am already sending the ghillies, and I just happen to have several sporran chain/straps lying around (I do not use them) I will include one of them with the shoe shipment. No guarantees on size but you can usually cut out a few links from each side to make it shorter if Mark's waist is not as big as the smallest size on the chain strap. Better to have more options than fewer. Happy to oblige.
