    Alpaca Wool Kilt?

So the wife has been knitting blankets and stuff, and the idea came up of Alpaca wool. Anybody ever seen Alpaca wool cloth?

Sorry Miah I haven't heard anything about alpaca cloth, but that does not mean anything, however it does sound interesting.

Well I have seen thick sweater like material from Alpaca, just never a uber tight weave that would be need'd to make a Kilt from, maybe I will have to look into it there are a few Alpaca farms here in Colorado. (not to mention it is so soft)

I'm sure I've seen it somewhere, I beleive a scarf made out of a alpaca/wool blend (70/30), and that's cut from a length of fabric, not a knitted scarf in the standard sense. Never seen it in bulk, only small bits, but I'm sure it's out there, and so soft!

Yeah the Material is soft Like Cashmere but as sturdy as sheep wool.
They had a few Alpaca herders at the CO state fair and I checked out some of the knitt type stuff they offered, I have not had much luck looking on Google but maybe I will run across something. From what I understand wearing it is not itchy either. So it may be a great choice for a Nice heavy wool kilt.

    Miah,

    Check out these folks http://purelyalpaca.com/index.php

You could buy some of their plaid blankets and sew them into a kilt laddie.

If so it may be worth a try, but I'm sure I could not do it. I would have to send it off to a pro or somebody that was up to the challenge.

Would be nice if there was a place to go to see it in person. Wonder what happens when its cut, might be a loose weave that wouldn't work. If it is tight and would hold when cut, my suggestion is to talk to Kathy Lare down in Albuquerque...she's trained to do hand sewn traditional kilts, but I'm sure she'd wanna look at the cloth too. www.kathyskilts.com

Think you are definately onto a great idea, particularly for Colorado winters.

this has got me thinking Ron, what do ya think about an old Military issue green wool blanket? And maybe figure out a way to get the "US" Centered on the front apron. I don't know just an idea being the talk about the blanket thing.

I've toyed with that idea also Miah. It may be a little scratchy but I've never felt a wool kilt so it may not be much different.
