| | | Alterntives to Sporrans???
I use kilts as everyday wear and find the sporran a pain in the .... we, you know what I mean. And I have tried the Utilikilt sort of thing with the cargo pockets. The pockets tend to flap against the legs and otherwise ruin my gait and are bulky.
To find an alternative I rummaged through my junk box and found an old military ammo pouch with the slide belt clips. I hung it on my kilt belt and viola! Instant wallet compartment. The concept is good, but the 40 year old greasy OD canvas is not what I would say is good to look at. I don't necessarily want to look like an over armed sheriff's deputy, but does anyone know of a maker of belt pouches one can add to a kilt belt to gain some cargo capacity?

I have worn a waistpack (with the pack in the front) when dressed casually.

I often wear the Sport Sporran, which is the waistpack that SportKilt sell for only $12. I tend to wear it like a waistpack on the hip, but there's nothing stopping you from wearing it at the front (although to me that's one of the things about sporrans that I dislike). One of the dividers disintegrated, so it used to have three compartments and now only has two, but for that price I shouldn't really grumble.
I do have a couple of regular sporrans, but only tend to wear them to go to the festivals.
I also have a SportKilt with slit pockets ($20 extra) and Freedom Kilts also offer those, although there kilts are a bit more money. Both of those firms do both tartan and non-tartan kilts. Those kind of pockets don't really show (until you put your hands in them!), although they do move around inside the kilt. I try to limit what I put in them, even down to having a special bunch of keys with fewer keys on it.

I usually wear a jacket of some sort when kilted, either a tweed Crail or some sort windcheeter/bumfreezer. Plenty of pocket space.
Regards Chas

You might also check with Steve at Oconee Leatherworks. He has been known to create some of these in the past. I also seem tor recall that Matt carries pouches like that at the Scottish Tartans Museum gift shop.

Another cool alternative is made possible by the Compass kilt from Alphakilts. Daron uses MOLLE/PALS webbing at the waist to attach the pockets and to create a unique system for an adjustable waistline.
The Compass kilt will accept any MOLLE/PALS modular attachments, so your options are almost limitless.

If you don't need much in the way of storage space (i.e. just enough for an ID, a credit card, and maybe a couple folded bills), I found a belt in the women's section of Target the other day that was pretty interesting. It had a small pouch in place of a belt buckle. It looked pretty neat, but I prefer my sporran anyway

Check out cheaper than dirt. They have a large selection of olive drab and black military pouches of various sizes for good prices.
