Am I missing something? Tartans with pockets?

Looking -no, DROOLING, at the TFCK catalog I'm looking at the big outside pockets on their contemporary tartan kilts.

Who am I overlooking that makes a contemporary kilt out of tartan poly material that puts pockets in them like the front "pants" type pockets on the Utilikilt Mocker?

Seems that would be a natural thing to do, which means someone probably does it, maybe right under my aging nose, and I've forgotten.

Help appreciated.

A quick response, Colin: the detachable pockets do not work quite so well, in my opinion, on the tartan kilt. I have one only on my Gunn, Weathered Colours TFCK kilt, and unfortunately the pattern or sett of the tartan is broken because the pocket does not lie exactly in the right place when carrying items. It is not too bad when empty ...... but what is the point of that?! No, I do wear the pocket in lieu of a sporran sometimes, don't get me wrong, but it does not look as good as it does on the plain kilts. I also prefer to wear only one pocket at a time.

Now, I MUST get back to my packing....

That TFCK Catalogue is something else, isn't it? So are the kilts it displays, although most of them are better suited to guys younger than myself!!!

A full Traditional, hand-sewn, 8 yarder, with side slash pockets, and rear double welt pockets.

Only makes sense to me.

Thanks Colin...Hector Russel was one of the first companies I looked at when I caught this disease, but had forgotten them.

Ham, you're right...but it's the creativity and flexibility that appeals to me...the spirit of those guys at TFCK. Heck, maybe they can make kilts to conceal my Depends (old folks diapers) when I age some more and embrace incontinence.

Archangel, guess so...I got a deal that I'd call a catalog rather than a brochure about 6" tall by 8 1/2" wide.

Steve, you're the man! That's exactly what i had in mind...only contemporary poly tartan rather than 8 yards....the patch pockets must be a challenge.

One thing I'll say for pants is that I do like the way the pockets are, or else I'm really used to them. Combining the pocket arrangements of pants into a knockaround tartan kilt, would seem like a great way to go if its possible. That's what I like most about the UK mocker. I can have pockets when wearing it to work and not have do explain or deal with a sporran.

Been there... done that.

For musicians, there are numerous options for pockets and holders. The only trick is prefectly lining-up the tartan to hide the outside applications. As for the inside pockets, it's not that tough. Hell, you can retro-fit them into any existing kilt with relative ease.

If you DON'T match-up, or make the pockets hidden, the things look REALLY tacky. Knowing TFCK, they're probably incredible.

I've been wearing Hillwalkers by Hector Russell for many years now, probably about twelve-in fact my first HW was an original from before HW took over the idea.

Their pockets are leather bound at the opening, which makes for durability-and though obvious-no one, not even at serious highland events has commented. There is also a small fob pocket in leather on the right upper front of the outer apron: excellent for keys-a credit card etc.

For day to day wear it obviates the need for all the flummery of a sporran-a great advantage when driving.

I'd suggest that the HW is an ideal example of how the kilt has evolved and continues to evolve: whilst retaining it's traditional roots and satisfying a traditionalist like myself.

I would love to have a tartan kilt with pants style pockets, but the Hillwalker is too expensive for me. I wish someone would make a casual 4-yard (or so) kilt made of PV or wool with pockets.
