Probably a photo of me wearing them w/kilt somewhere around here. I just wear them with the usual offwhite hose and any old t-shirt...works pretty well.

Got some Red Wings too, bombproof boots...but if I'm wandering around town, it's the Docs, and "hiking" is a pair of running shoes...

If I am wearing boots with a kilt it's not for the look, it's for the function, which for me is usually hiking. Lightweight non-Goretex for summer, insulated Goretex for winter etc. Sierra Trading has great deals on all kinds of boots. If the model you want is available in your size, you can save big bucks on high quality products.

+2 on the classic 8-eye docs. I've got 'em in shiny black and greasy brown.

If it's really hot and the ground is going to be soft and uneven (hiking, etc) I personally like THESE, the Palladium commando boot, in 'sand' colour.

They look a lot like the South African army boots I was issued with in 1975. They have a good grip on the sole, and having them well up above the ankle gives good support when walking in rough country.
My original army boots (1968) barely covered my ankles properly and had flat leather soles. They were most uncomfortable in rough terrain, especially when worn with anklets.
The standard colour for South African army boots is brown.
There is a story told about two South African officers who were selected to go on a special mission during the Second World War, in which they were not allowed to wear any identifying badges or other marks. On the way they stopped in an Arab town (Egypt, I think) to have their boots polished. The shoeshine boy immediately said: “South African!” “How did you know that?” they asked. Grinning, he said: “Brown boots!”
However the kilted regiments wear black, as does the SA Navy.
This meant that on my way to my first regimental camp in 1969, my first duty on arriving in the railway junction town of De Aar was to go to a shoe shop and purchase a bottle of black shoe dye to ensure that my boots were correct for the regiment. I also had to purchase shoe white for my anklets (previously plain) and polish up the brass regimental collar badges that had been issued to me the year before, covered in a brown protective layer.
The anklet brass also had to shine (although that I was used to already). But at least with the taller boots, anklets were only required with kilts, not with field uniform.
