New modern kilts
Hi all,
I have two Utilikilt survivor models and I LOVE them. I wear them all the time, caint beat all the deep pockets. Problem is, they cost WAYYYYYYY too much.
I'm needing a few more modern kilts(ie. Alphakilts, Celticwarriorkilts, alt.kilt) but dont know what I'll do without all the pockets that I'm used to. I know several of the above companies make cargo pockets and some have a "sporran". I guess all my junk would fit into the cargos but I really dont like the cloth "sporran" that they come with.
What do yall think of a traditional sporran (Rob Roy or other) with a modern kilt? Would that look really goofy?
Also, a question I've been wondering about for a while. With the Utilikilt mocker (alternative to Dockers) what kind of socks do you wear. Like the casual, dressed up for me, polo shirt and regular shoes not hiking boots. Wool hiking socks would look bad, white tube= really bad, black dress socks are even worse!
Thanks for yalls input and ideas.

I plan to get a couple of utility type kilts (probably an Amerikilt and an Alt.Kilt) in the near future. I have a Thorfinn Custom Sporran that I plan to use with them. It's huge and handles all of my stuff plus my girlfriend's. I prefer it to pockets. I don't think it will look particularly 'goffy.' I plan to wear this as an alternative to 'business casual' for work and I'm going to simply wear my regular hose and garter ties with oxfords or loafers. I've seen Steve pull this off quite well.

You might consider the Stillwater Nightstalker sporran that Steve has for a more modern looking sporran if you're worried about a Rob Roy style.
Cheers,

I'm with ya on pretty much everything you said. I love the pockets on my UK Workman, and IMHO that's the appeal of wearing it for the things I do. Without the pockets, I really don't see the point in wearing a modern style kilt.
But the UK sure is pricy! Have you considered making your own X-Kilt and adding pockets wherever you want? Or maybe talking to the other makers and seeing if they can add external pockets to your custom desires?
On the sock thing, I have the same dilemma. This is why I don't wear my UK with regular shoes. I only wear it with boots (and preferably gaiters when hiking). I just think it looks pretty inappropriate with regular shoes, and can't find any combination of socks that look right. So I apologize, but I don't have a solution for you. All I do is stick with taller boots and do the scrunched-down sock thing over the tops of them.

Do not despair because you want and need pockets. It can be done. Even in a Tartan kilt.

How about pockets, a Plain colored kilt and a more traditional sporran?
yep.

And even with a Camo kilt.

It can be done. Just try it and see how you like the look.

Excellent examples!

I also believe that Alt.kilt will provide you with any number of pockets you want. From memory there was a notifiication on thier facebook page, a little while back, that they now do side slant pockets as well. I am sure if you contact them that they will give you the whole rundown.

Thanks all for your comments. Steve, thanks for the pictures and I really do like the kilts you make but (dont take offense) your prices are similar to Utilikilt. Anything more than 150.00 is too much for me.
I've asked several of the modern kilt companies if they could add slash pockets and rear pockets. Most said no, they only make them the ways advertised. Guess I'll just have to get used to all my junk in the cargo pockets.
If I'm gonna wear a sporran and kilt hose, I might as well put on my tank. Dressing up is nice every once in a while but I prefer the modern kilt to blue jeans and I wear them in that way. Hiking boots, crew length socks and ANY color of t-shirt I have.
Has anybody bought a www.Alphakilts.com ? I'm really liking the box pleated one. Thats probably the next one I'll get. If you have one, please let me know how you like it! Thanks

I have a black twill kilt that I wear. It has pockets. Sometimes I wear a sporan with it -- sometimes not. I never wear hose with it though. Either boots or sandals usually.

Guiness>water,
I was not trying to sell you one of my kilts. You already stated that your budget was tight.
I was showing pictures of what is possible. There really is no reason any kilt can't have pockets if you wish. Even an 8yard hand sewn Tartan kilt can have pockets.
I was trying to show that even a very modern kilt could look right paired with more traditional accessories.
Nothing more than using examples from my own kilts to make a point. I guess I could have tried to find photos like mine from some other maker but then I'd have to get permission to use the photos, and frankly, there are not a lot of us out there putting pockets in a kilt than looks and swishes like a kilt should.
But never let the lack of pocketed kilt makers stop you. It is possible.

Thanks again Steve, I do appreciate your comments and pictures.
Even though traditional sporran w/ modern kilt can be done, not sure I'd like it.
www.celticwarriorkilts.com has a pic of the Kilted Carver

wearing a military pouch sporran. Looks great, and the kilts are cheaper without pockets. I might have to try it. Still, I wish Alpakilts had front slant pockets too.
