Socks and shoes

Hi, I just received my first kilt (original black utilikilt) about a week or two ago and I'm already hooked... I'm planning on getting a tan original with my next paycheck! Now, school season is almost here and along with it some colder weather is on the way. I've been wearing the kilt almost constantly and want to continue doing so as far into the winter as I can.

My first question is, what kind of socks would work out better with a utilikilt? I've searched and searched, but all the results end up having to do with traditional kilt hose. The two types of socks that I've been looking at are these thigh high socks (which I think are the same ones that are being sold on the Utilikilts website as 3/4 leg socks) and the diamond rib knee high socks that I saw recommended on a blog somewhere. It seems the thigh high socks would work well for keeping the legs warm, but I'm wondering how they actually look in action. I'm not a particular fan of the combat boots/scrunched sock look, so I'm talking about them being pulled straight up to the thigh. Or are there any other recommendations?

My other question is about shoes. Now that I've gotten a kilt I've started paying more attention to how I look than jeans+tshirt+sneakers. Can anyone recommend a durable brand of shoes that would not look out of place in casual (tshirt) to more formal (polo/button up shirt) situations?

Thanks for you time!

Firstly from Toronto Ontario Canada. Secondly I would steer clear of thigh high socks unless you turn them down at the knee. If you pull them all the way up it will just not look like a kilt but a skirt. I'd take a look at the Casual Kilted Photo thread here:

For ideas on shoes and socks.

Welcome to the forum. I too have a black original and Caramel workman. Seems matching your socks to your shirt color doesn't shorten your legs as much as fashion experts would have you believe. Tan casual button up, tan socks. White polo white socks. I only wear my UKs with ankle high black Sketcher boots for now. Every time I try to wear with a pair of running shoes or cross-trainers my wife says no, looks weird. But I push my socks down to the top of my boots when wearing the casual UKs.

I have worn these as well with the Black.

and here I am with the sketchers.

Welcome to X-marks from Atlanta! I've always worn my black high top boots with whatever over the calf socks I have, or my hose scrunched down. Just try something out. If you like it, wear it. You can go through all the pics here and see what you think you may like. You'll soon see that there is great range of ideas and tastes.

Hi all, thanks for posting! It looks like I'll be ordering a pair or two of the knee high socks as well as keeping an eye out for some ankle high boots (after browsing the casual dress thread I almost kicked myself for forgetting there were boots other than combat boots, d'oh!)

First off, Welcome!

I'm not good at embedding links so here's a cut and paste to long socks from utili-kilt. You can fold them a few times, or they are long enough to just let scrunch but still cover your calf:

http://www.utilikilts.com/store/index.php?cPath=17

For shoes/boots, I wear short-boonie style boots. Walmart has them under the name "Banjo" I think. Any 6 inch high or less boot works for me in Michigan weather until its deep enough or muddy enough to break out the combats.
