    Sporrans with contemporary kilts?

How many of you guys wear sporrans with your UK's, Amerikilts, Freedom Kilts, etc? Got pics? Just want to see some options....

I wear a sporran with a Buzz Kidder... Probably not quite exactly what you are talking about, though.

My A_Hay sporran with my Amerikilt. I think it looks good. Truth is, I have a black basic leather sporran from SWK that I prefer to wear with my AK, but I was on a road trip with the whole family, and there is only so much room, so I brought my two nicest sporrans.

    Alaskan,

This is just my personal opinion, but I think a Scottish type sporran with a contemporary (non-traditional) kilt looks somewhat out of place. The Amerikilt comes with it's own cloth sporran made out of the same material, and in the same color as the kilt, plus you also get one back pocket. UK's, Freedom kilts, etc., have ample pocket storage. Also, I prefer non-traditional kilts without flashes and kilt pins. Kilt hose look o.k.

I guess my point is, these are not traditional Scottish kilts, or modern kilts that resemble Scottish kilts. I have nothing against Scottish kilts and Scottish type accessories because I have several traditional Scottish kilts. I also have several Amerikilts and prefer to keep a pure, non-traditional look when I wear them. Again, just my opinion. Certainly there are no rules. We are all free to use the accessories we please.

I wear leather day sporrans with my two Amerikilts.
Often I prefer to use classic sporrans instead of the cotton one that come with the Amerikilt.

I don't wear sporrans with my UK's but they all have big cargo pockets. I've heard of people wearing them with UK mockers though.

    Best regards,

Personally, I like the idea of a sporran with a contemporary kilt. To me, traditional accessories help associate an otherwise untraditional garment with a traditional kilt. Granted, my only non-wool, non-tartan kilt is an X-kilt with no pockets, but if I were to purchase another type of contemporary kilt I would forgo the cargo pockets and wear my sporran proudly.

If the kilt has pockets (my three UKs), then I don't wear a sporran.

I decide this on 3 criteria:

    Function
    Appearance or Esthetics
    Comfort

With the pocket options that contemporary kilts like FK's and UK's come with there is little functional need for a sporran. As long as you can carry everything you need in the pockets you won't need a sporran.

Esthetically there is little need for a sporran as well. Traditional kilts are very long and it can look odd having such a long portion of the body covered in tartan or solid cloth without something to break up the length. Traditionally that is done by wearing a wide belt and/or in conjunction with a sporran. These accessories bring the outfit and the overall image back in to a proportion that is attractive. Contemporary kilts are typically a little shorter than traditional kilts so there is less need to address proportions. Even if you did need a little extra capacity, a backpack might be a better choice than a tasseled sporran.

Comfort is my last criteria. That's completely preference but if function and appearance of my outfit are both satisfied, I'll opt against a sporran most of the time.
