OK, So I'm not sure if this belongs in the Traditional Forum, or the Contemporary Forum, but since what I'm looking for is less than 100% traditional, I'll put it here.

I'm wondering if anyone has or has seen a modern replacement for the Prince Charlie? I am looking for a formal jacket to wear with my traditional kilt to a black tie event, but the Prince Charlie look with all of it's silver buttons isn't necessarily what I'm after. Looking at the history of the jacket it doesn't seem that it's changed much since it's introduction in the Victorian era. Meanwhile the dinner jacket and tail coat have continued to evolve over time.

Is there a modern version, or has anyone seen dinner jackets cut a high enough waist to wear with a kilt?

I did see one at Burnett's & Struth in Barrie Ontario that while it looked formal enough, was not a traditional Prince Charlie or Argyll it was quite handsome and I'm sure it would do for many different ocassions. Perhaps you could get in touch with them.

Your best bet would probably be a Mess Jacket, which is like a tail coat with the tails cut off. Geoffrey (Tailor) do a nice one.

We've been talking about Eton jackets over in another thread. This would be paired with a three button waistcoat and bowtie for the formal outfit. You might not need to have the silver buttons.

It could also be converted into a mess jacket without too much trouble.

Thanks for the links. Burnett's & Struth didn't show anything other than a PC and Argyll on their website, but I sent an email enquiring. The Geoffrey (Tailor) site has something they call a 21st Century Kilt Jacket, unfortunately the photo on their site is far too dark, and you can't make out any of the details.

I'm also just considering getting a Prince Charlie, removing all the silver buttons, and replacing the front ones with black modern suit buttons. Do you think this would look odd? That's really my objection to the standard PC, is that the silver buttons give it a military feel.

I like the thought of an Eton Jacket - very clean lines. Are they typically cut high enough to show off the kilt?

Unfortunately, they don't have a picture of the mess jacket on their site. It looks like a short single-breasted tuxedo jacket. The 21st Century kilt jacket is more like a cross between a normal suit jacket and an Argyll.

I agree with Ted. An Eton jacket is a good choice.
