| | | UK's and Sporrans
Hi all!
Just thought I'd float an idea amongst you about wearing sporrans with Utilikilts.
Before I get flamed, I know they don't NEED a sporran! I am not suggesting they do! They work fine without sporrans - I admit that!
But, in my personal, and admittedly quirky, opinion, it seems that the presence of a sporran could "dress up" a Utilikilt.
I've got three UK originals. They're fine as casual wear, but to wear to the office, I've experimented with sporrans with them, and found that it sort of,... well,... "completes" the look.
I know I'm not alone in this as the Utilikilt website even has chaps wearing UK's with sporrans in their photo gallery, and one of the "mockumercials" has they guy with a really bad fake Scottish accent wearing a sporran (a Buzz Kidder if I'm not mistaken).
I'm just wondering if I'm part of a very few who think that the look can (but doesn't have to!) go together.
Does anyone else think that a sporran with a Utilikilt might be an okay look? Does anyone think it'd be a dreadful combination?
On your own time...

I hadn't really thought about it. If I were going to wear a sporran with one of my UKs it would be the Mocker. The slash pockets on the Mocker are a little less obvious than on the Workman (the other model I own).
I recently got a Compass model kilt from Alpha Kilts. It uses MOLLE/PALS webbing to attach the pockets (and any MOLLE/PALS compatible modules you want). This means you can remove the pockets altogether and wear it as a plain kilt with sporran.

I totally agree!
I have a Mocker and recently bought a brown leather day sporran to wear with it. The pockets are great, but their depth can be a bit awkward at time. The chain the sporran came with looked a bit off, but now that the sporran strap has arrived I'll have to try the whole outfit on and get a picture posted. I'd love to see other UK & sporran pics.

This has been kicked around before. Some people like the look, others think its like teats on a boar. I asked my wife once, and she said "No." End of discussion.
Best regards,
Jake

Yeah, personal thing. I have one sporran. It's brown. It wouldn't look good with my black UK Mocker or my Blaklader. It would look fine with my brown UK Workman, and of course it looks spiff with my Freedom Kilts Tartan Model (Maple Leaf).
I sometimes find the pockets on the Workman "uncongenial" so I will try the sporran some time. I have belt hangers for it that fit my 1 3/4 inch regular belt, so it's been on my mind.
Besides, if I fill the pockets with beer, I'll have no room for my wallet!

I have two Xkilts, no UKs. I haven't put pockets on any of mine or Scooby's and I wear a sporran out with mine all the time.

Xena,
Quite a long while ago Sorcerer Dale asked what a sporran would look like worn with a utilikilt. Though new to kilts and XMTS I obliged him
Let's see...
White hose check
Flat cap check
Western belt buckle check
Flashes with a Utilikilt check
Sporran with a Utilikilt check
End result?
But let's just focus on the sporran.
Modern/Contemporary kilts are their own thing. To me they look best when worn proudly as a Modern/Contemporary kilt. They aren't traditional highland attire and a traditional sporran looks out of place. There is no functional need for it and style-wise they don't work at all.
If for some reason you did need a pouch for additional storage I would suggest getting a utilitarian fanny pack.
Wow, looking at the photo above I am sure glad I had all the good folks from XMTS to learn from and help me find my own look
Cheers
Jamie

Xena, no need to apologize. I have a long memory for threads that I've read. It can actually be hard to search for past threads where the questions involve UKs since "UK" is too short a word for the internal search feature, and one has to go outside to use google. Searching for Utilikilt and Sporran did pull up these, though. http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/s...rran+utilikilt http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/m...rran+utilikilt Quote:

As others have said, the Mocker, with its cleaner lines, most lends itself to the use of a sporran, and I've seen plenty of UK's worn with hose and flashes.
Best regards,
Jake
