Are you offended when its called a skirt? Cos I am!

Why do these things always happen when I go to a concert? I was at the Rammstein concert in Manchester last night (oldest there by a millenium or two) and just as I was about to leave the concourse to enter the arena itself a mate I was with pointed out that a group of girls had taken a phonephoto of the bloke in the leather skirt. Sheesh. Kids eh?

I've long since stopped worrying about the ignorant in the world, especially girls (usually teenagers) that "know everything" Plus the fact that "it's a kilt, it's a skirt" I'm still comfortable.

No, not really. When people do say skirt it's usually not in an offensive manner, anyway, so I don't worry about it.

Doesn't bother me. The ones that call a kilt a skirt mostly don't know anything about it. It's often a good chance to educate.

I happened to be wearing my kilt at work one day, and was walking accross campus to teach my class. Kilts are something that are infrequently seen here at the community colleges, so I got quite a few wide-eyed stares I walked down the hall, and one young man decided he wanted to look "cool" in front of his friends by making a negative statement (I don't even remember what he said) about my kilt.

I stopped, turned on my heel, and walked right back in front of him & gave him a 5 minute lecture on the history of the kilt and its sybolism for those of Scottish (and Celtic) heritage. He turned bright red, and as I walked off, I heard one of his friends say to him that he really looked stupid when I was dressing him down.

I saw him a couple of more times last semester when I was in "saxon" dress, and he would quickly look away and avoid eye contact with me. I guess he was afraid I might talk to him again!

I have been grudgingly accepted and lauded alike at work. The skirt joke is just that at this point, a joke. I have a co-worker who occasionally wears his hair in pig-tails (a la Danny Fortson of the SuperSonics), who just asks if I am comfortable with my masculinity on a day where I'm kilted, because he figures, anyone who would wear a "skirt" would have to be... Who cares anyway, my wife finds it sexy.

Well mostly when they call it a "Quilt" instead of kilt.

I agree, life it too short to worry.
I usually just reply "it's not a skirt, it's a kilt"

Sometimes I ask them if they know why it's called a kilt, they say 'no', "that's what happened to the last person who called it a skirt" (they were 'killt').

ie, I make a joke out of it.

It bothers me only in the strategic sense that it'll be harder to get more guys to wear them if they are known as skirts since, in America anyway, skirts are still thought to be women's clothing.

The same reason they call dolls for boys "action figures" because most boys won't play with something called a "doll".

I sometimes get the "nice skirt" comment. I just reply, "Thanks. I call it a kilt."

It doesn't bother me when I am wearing my Utilikilt. It seems most people think they are just skirts.

But when I am in my tartan, you better call it a kilt.
