I opened the mailbox to find my copy of The Art of Kiltmaking. I swiftly went in the house, opened the package, and thumbed through the book. This thing is chock full of information.. accompanied by pictures! Along with the book was a tutorial about making flashes from tartan scraps and another about making a nice thimble suitable for kiltmaking. I'm totally amazed.. this book is much more than "making" a kilt and, in my honest opinion, quite a bargain for the price.

It is a wonderful book, and is fun to read, even if you are not quite ready to start right now. I had picked up a bolt end (3.5 yards, approx.) of a tartan (can't tell what kind it is) only to find out that it is assymetrical. Then the book arrived, and I found out how to check if I could make a kilt from it. (yes I can, and I'll post pics when I get started. Hope you like it as much as I do.

Well, I have made a few kilts already but they were of cotton and one in PV. I have 6 yards of 13 ounce tartan cloth and the difference between this and the other materials is like night and day. 13 ounce tartan is such a dream to work with. Now I understand why some kiltmakers prefer medium/heavy tartan for kilts.

I know what you mean. I bought a remnant from F&K and then had to buy the book to go with it. I put up a picture of all my pending projects last night and now just want the time to work on them all.
