I am making a skirt for my wife. It is grey light weight wool tweed. Here is a concept for the kilt skirt: Reverse Kinguisse in the front (5 pleats each side of the center reverse inverted pleat) and Reverse Kinguisse in the rear (same as the front. Here is the schematic of the bottom of the kilt skirt:

I wasn't sure if reverse Kinguisse was the right term for this pleating, so let me know.

Here is a picture of the front pleats:

The 5 pleats on one side are just like making a kilt from the fell up to the to of the kilt. The other 5 pleats on the opposite side of the reverse pleat need to be done from the top of the kilt to the bottom of the fell (opposite of the traditional method of making a kilt). I also wanted to keep the material of the skirt at a minimum so the pleats have only 1/2" reveal and 1/2" behind the reveal. This makes only two layers for the pleated section, if the pleats had larger depth, the thickness of the pleated section would be four layers thick.

The center is the reverse inverted pleat. The back is exactly the same:

Last step was to sew the two halves together, get a quick fit on the wife and sew the other side together. Took the night off and now am ready to attach the hidden zipper:



The side is pinned together and the zipper sewn on. Test fit, uh-oh, too big. Ripped the zipper out and remarked the location of the zipper.

Interesting design and I'm eager to see the final result. AFAIK, that is true Kingussie pleating -- for Reverse Kingussie, the knife pleats face to the center, and meet in the center to form an inner box pleat. If you turned the skirt inside out, you'd be looking at RevK.

And lovely material, too! Hmmmm, I have some saffron Tencel that came by mail and turned out to be too light for kilting. . . might have a use for it after all!
