Project Great Kilt (belted plaid)

I'm really looking forward to this...
...with the holidays approaching, my plan is to be in great kilt, absolutely, by Christmas; T-giving would be even better. Most of my family members wear Phillabegs... think it would be cool to be the BP wearer in the holiday photos.
My first chore is selecting yardage. This mostly Germanic area I live in will make tartan shopping difficult. May have to go the online route. Any suggestions on PV sources will be appreciated...
I'm a bit on the "thick" side... I wear a size 40 phillabeg, I figure 5 yards ought to do me OK.

I've always liked the look of the predominately brown/earthy tartans, although my family wears Stewart.
Probably will go with Stewart, for the holiday/family reasons... personal choice to come later.

A merchant at the MD RenFest was kind enough to show me how to fold & wear a PB, I've been hooked on the idea of a Great Kilt ever since.
The versatility of how a GK can be worn is very appealing, to me.

Ideas, suggestions, hints, links, advice and threats would be greatly appreciated!

I'm a fan of the belted plaid. I purchased one from the Misty Thicket that I quite happy with. I got a blue bonnet to go with it as well as my clan tartan. I like the look of the medieval mocassins without hose.

Since you are of Stewart heritage, take a look at the Old Stewart tartan produced in authentic eighteenth century colors available here:
http://giftshop.scottishtartans.org/historic.htm

It's 13 oz wool, and comes 54" wide. Perfect for a great kilt and accurate coloration to boot!

Aye,
Matt

That is an awesome tartan!
(I'm not fond of bright tartans... in fact I generally wear dark, muted colors)
It's now High on my list!
Thanks!!

Just to throw another picture in to the mix, here's the Great Kilt I made for wearing to my brother's wedding at a Renaissance Festival. This was my first kilt, made from a lucky find of 60" wide wool plaid in a nice pattern on a fabric website's clearance page.

And a bad photo of how I wear it when I get tired of it pulling my shirt up (which turns out is more comfortable and useful anyway for me). Wish I'd re-ironed it before the photo...or retaken it after getting better socks. Oh well, live and learn.
