    Tartan Fabric on Ebay

Here is a listing for 5 yds of 14 oz fabric:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...ayphotohosting

It says Black Watch, though the sett looks a little different to me....

I agree, the sett is off a bit. Someone more fluent in tartans may be able to rule out that it's just a variation from a different weaver but compared to swatches from USA kilts and Bear Kilts it doesn't match Blackwatch.

I think its fine with the following in mind:

    1. If your trying to match with someone else, IE be in uniform it could be a problem.

    2. You will have to pick the white thread out of the selvage. Which depending on your ability at thread picking, and ability to deal with the total maddness that will ensue if you screw it up make it either a steal or a waste of money. You could ruin the selvage if you are not careful and end up with a kilt that is unraveling

I have alot of fabric like this as loaner greatkilts for new recruits in my reenactment group, but try to push people into constructing a real 2 piece great kilt out of proper colored and woven tartan asap.

It's definitely not Black Watch. Black Watch has an A-B-A-C repeat, with the B and C blocks being different (one blue block has two double black stripes, like this tartan has, but the other block has a single centered double black stripe). And the green block in Black Watch has only a single black stripe, not a double one. And the proportions are wrong - the green block should be proportionately smaller.

The picture looks like the piece doesn't have a kilting selvedge. So, the white thread is a moot point and would be hidden in the hem that you'd have to put in this kilt.

Could make a nice kilt with a hem!

I'm impressed that they know the term blackwatch. For the majority of folks, anything that's blue and green is blackwatch.

You can always hit this site to check on ANY tartans out there. Click on the link and make sure to bookmark it. I use it all the time.
