What's with this fabric?

Does this look like it would be good kilt material? The listing doesn't give a weight but it looks like it could be heavy, and the price is right so far. Do the experts recognize anything about this that would argue against using it?

I've been watching it all week, and was going to throw in a bid, but I was wondering about that front edge; it doesn't look like it would be suitable as selvedge. Would this be a case where a hem is needed?

I really like the color combo - colorful, but still kinda subdued. It would be my first non-nightstalker tartan.

Would this be considered a "weathered" or "ancient" color scheme, or does it just happen to be a subdued tartan?

It looks a lot like Anderson but I've not compared them. You could make a fringed edge like USA Kilts does along the bottom. It really looks good.

It does look similar to the Anderson tartan, as Cavescout said. I did a check on Anderson tartans at The Scottish Tartans Authority, but can't quite match the colors with any of the Anderson variations - could be my monitor though.

If Matt Newsome sees your post he may recognize it immediately. I take it that this is wool? About all I can contribute is that if it's a tight weave, and at least 10 oz per square yard, it would probaby make a good kilt.

Also, maybe one of our women members that make kilts can offer some good advice.

This is all it says:

This auction is for 3 1/2 yds of wool. It is plaid mostly williamsburg blue with red, some black and white. It has stamped on Made in Scotland . My mother in law use to do a lot of sewing and had a man bring several pieces from Scotland for her.This was one of them. It is 62" wide. A very nice peice of material.

I've sent a couple of emails back and forth with the seller. She says it's wool, and she weighed the 3.5 yards all together. From the weight she gave me, the material should come out to roughly 10-11oz material.

The edge is not a selvedge edge, it's rough with those threads you see in the picture - around the "MADE IN SCOTLAND" going to about 1/4-1/2 inch away from the edge.

She also sent three more images that I asked her to take.





The pictures aren't the greatest quality, she said she was working with a new camera, or old camera, or something, I don't remember

Wow, those pictures don't make it look good, do they? What happened to the blue? That looks like a completely different tartan.

Back off, huh? I'll take it under consideration.

Yep, that's Anderson Tartan. One of you had better get it. Worry about the edge later, you can make something work.

Yeah, worry about the edge later. The fabric I'm working with has no kilting selvedge at all and goes from a twill weave to a plain weave at the edge, but a little hemming and a good press of the edge will take care of it.

The only problem is the actual hemming itself, which is a right PITA!!!
