Just saw this tartan, and its a real winner in MHO. Problem is i know nothing about it! Would appreciate any info folks.....thanks

From the USA Kilts Web site -

Most of the tartans are registered and the few tartans that are not registered clan names are starred *.

It is a sharp tartan, no doubt, but it would appear there is no 'history' behind it.

From the picture it looks like the warp is different than the weft (a different design in the verticle and horizontal). Aside from the new Welsh tartans that the Welsh Tartan Center has created, this is a very uncommon feature in traditional tartans. Generally speaking, one of the defining characteristic of a tartan is the same warp and weft design.

If you see a pattern like this with a different warp and weft design, it's usually a fashion design intended for use in things like men's shirts, skirts, cushion covers, and other fashion applications. Not a traditional Scottish tartan. The very "industrial" sounding name (Div 17), tends to support this.

Not that it would not make a nice looking kilt, it would just be different. I've made a couple of kilts out of an English tweed that was made in a fashion plaid design like this and they were beautiful. They just weren't a traditional design.

both of the above 2 comments are correct... it is NOT a registered tartan. Back when we just started, we were getting any tartan material we could get our hands on until we found Marton Mills. This is just one of the VERY few left over tartans from the very humble beginnings of USAK. It IS different in the warp and weft. It's actaully a cotton poly (the last one we'll carry) in about a 9 oz fabric. It is NOT PV.

During this "growing phase", the AOH Div 17 in Philly asked us to make kilts for them. We showed them different swatches of material we had on hand and they chose that one. Since it was new to us and it didn't have a name that WE could find, we named it after them... Div 17.

And shows that the naming of tartans today is still the same as back in the day!

Man: Sir, what tartan is that?
Shopkeeper: Well, the Gunns were the last to order it, so it must be Gunn!
Man: Well I am a McDonald, so I need my tartan!
