USAK's are great aren't they! And the tape DOES NOT LIE! Men's clothing manufacturers lie to soother our vanity. Ask the women, they have been dealing with it for years.
And for some pics of the Cladish (one of my faves), check out this thread.

As I like saying to customers who argue with me about the measurements...
I can make a kilt to fit your BODY or a kilt to fit your EGO. Which do you want?

I would say go with your first intuition and get the MacDonald tartan. I think you could totally wear your brown shirts with it. The MacDonald tartan also has quite a bit of blue in it, so you could wear some complitmentary blue shirts and/or accessories.
My kilt is in the Modern Grant, which is based in red and has a lot of green in it. Maybe when I get home, if I remember, I'll layout some different coloured shirts next to my kilt and take some pictures just to show what you could possibly wear with a kilt in those similar colours.
On a side note, when I was placing an order at one my local highland wear shoppes there was a finished kilt there waiting to be picked up; it just happened to be the same MacDonald taran, but it ancient colours. It was beautiful. I have some MacDonald blood in me - my great great great grandfather John F. Grant married Mary Macdonald - and would totally consider it for my 3rd kilt, if I ever get a 3rd kilt.

OOOh, very nice. And the kilt is nice too. I can't imagine anyone razzing you. Best wishes.

Looks fine to me. I think you'll be the only one who notices.
