Special Order PV tartans

Rocky,

In an older thread you mentioned that when you special ordered PV tartans
they were often heavier. Can you special order any tartan in PV or did you mean tartans that they weave occaisionally but don't keep in stock?

Hello Mattatacat,

I'm not sure excatly what you're referring to about the 'heavier' bit. I may have said that occasionally, depending on the dyes and the finishing and several other small factors, some PV cloth we receive is a little heavier or has a stiffer hand than some OTHER material we receive (from the same mill). Is that what you're referring to? If so, it's not something that we can control, it's just up to the mill.

Re: your other question... We CAN do special weaves of PV but there's a 130 Meter minimum. That's QUITE a few kilts... What is the tartan you're looking for?

Yes that is what I was referring to. Lewis of Wales is the one I was looking for I didn't realize that the minimum was quite that large though. I don't suppose you will be adding any Welsh tartans to the lineup anytime soon?

I just checked with a few contacts and found out that the Pride of Wales tartan MAY be available in PV in a few months (not anytime soon and it's not a 'done deal' yet). There are no other plans for any other Welsh tartans.

Rocky, I'll chime in and add that I've been looking around for a Poly-V Buchanan Modern. Is that something you've carried in the past or have had anyone else interested in before?

The Buchanan Modern is not one we've considered. We have the Buchanan Muted and is by far the 'preferred' tartan of most Buchanans I've spoken to. The most common comment we hear is that the bright yellow and red look a bit 'loud' and they prefer the muted colors.

Brown Watch, please...
I guess I should have just posted a request here instead of starting a new thread in the hopes that you'd notice my thinly veiled plea...

And while we're at it, make me a special run of the Colorado state, as well! Thanks!

Before the thread turns into a "Why isn't this woven in PV" thread, I think I should clarify something for people to see things through the eyes of a retailer.

Unfortunately, we have to weigh the 'commercial viability' of ANY tartan we'd do in a special weave (minimum of 130 M or roughly 40 to 50 kilts). The tartan must be of substancial 'desirability' (by our estimation). If we can't sell through the material in a year, it's money that would probably be better spent elsewhere on other inventory that we turn over more quickly.

The only way around this for tartans that would be slightly less commercially viable is to have a group of people (35 to 45) order Semi Trads and or Casuals in a particular tartan in one shot. This gets us at least CLOSE to the material yardage used in a special run (130 M).

While I PERSONALLY like Brown Watch (it's on my list for future kilts) it's not our most requested tartan.

The Colorado State tartan isn't one that we've considered, though we WILL be having a special run of 1 state tartan in PV in the near future... check back in a month or so.

Totally understandable, Rocky. I know you've got to be able to sell the material you buy, which means you need a demand for those tartans. I'm also glad to hear that you're a fan of Brown Watch. Perhaps you'll carry it by the time I'm ready to order (because I really want the kilt to be one of yours).
How often to you reassess and either add to or change up the tartans you offer?
