| | | Washing a USAK Casual
Rocky,
I just ordered a casual from you and I am wondering how I should go about washing it. Can I use my washing machine? If so, what settings should it be on? I am terrified to wash it for fear of ruining. My wife REFUSES to do it because of how much I regard my kilts. Any help would be appreciated.

For a USAK Poly Viscose kilt (or most ANY other brand PV kilt for that matter)... machine wash cold, with NO FABRIC SOFTENER and hang dry. http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/s...62&postcount=9 |

I'm terrible with an iron and my Clergy it starting to look a little disheveled. That is after a year, mind you. The pleats have held up really well.
So out of curiosity, why not get PV dry cleaned?

If you dry clean a P/V it takes out the Stain resistance and the finish that keeps the pleats lasting for so long.
Keep P/V away from the dry cleaner.

I turn mine inside out and wash it. When done, open it so it lays flat from inner apron to outer apron on a towel, straighten all the pleats and smooth them flat and let it air dry. Still looks like new after a couple years at least. Really no need to dry clean. If I wanted to dry clean I'd buy a wool kilt |

I've run my USAK casual through the washer at least a dozen times. Gentle cycle, cold wash/rinse, our regular "green" detergent (we don't use fabric softeners for anything). I prefer to line dry mine (rather than lay it out), but I'm in California so "solar drying" is possible most of the year (in fact, we haven't used a dryer in three years). When I hang it I pull the pleats straight and run my fingers along them--this effectively wet presses them into shape and removes wrinkles. After it's dry it's ready to wear. Works like a charm.

Are you guys leaving the velcro together or fully undoing the kilt and putting it in the ol washer? After adding another couple days of wear on a hiking trip mine is ready for its first wash (second wash? I did go for a swim in it), thought if the velcro was left together it would help the velcro last longer, or am I way off base? Is type of soap an issue, most any detergent without bleach, or is a woolite type needed for PV? Sounds like cavscout is turning it inside out and leaving it velcroed, I will try that for its first machine washing with just a touch of detergent.

DEFINITELY attache the hook and loop ends before putting it in the washer... it will keep them from 'grabbing' everything else in there and pilling your OTHER clothes.
