| | | Weathered MacRae
Ok, I have 2 wool MacRae Ancient Hunting kilts. My last 3 have been of the utilikilt brand, but now I am ready for a traditional-ish kilt again. I know the tartan I want this time and have been checking it out on USA kilts site. I am thinking of going with the MacRae Weathered. I like the brown tones of the weathered. I would like one that I can wear for everyday type occasions (pubs, hiking, work maybe). Also, an important note, It gets very hot and humid here in Arkansas so I perfer a lighter weight kilt. any suggestions?

I didn't see any of the MacRae tartans listed on the causal kilt page at USAK. I have one of their casual kilts and the PV is real nice and fairly light, but still looks great.

The weathered hunting MacRae was my first kilt, a tank from Houston Kiltmakers in Scotland. Love the colors. My other is and ancient hunting from SWK Considering getting MacRaes to America when the Society gets it woven.

Also, I'm not sure I understand how it can be "traditional" and "lighter weight"? I imagine a traditional kilt to be 8-yards of wool. Am I wrong?
I do typically prefer the weathered tartans, as you can see from my avatar!

The MacRae Weathered tartan is not available in PV, but it is available in 13 oz wool. I can do a 5 Yard Wool kilt in it from Lochcarron's 13 oz fabric for $320 (or $350 for hips over 46).
For the record, a Weathered (or muted for that matter) tartan CAN be used for formal wear. It's all in how you dress the outfit up or down. For example, I am using the Scott Green Weathered tartan for our wedding in May (I'll post pictures afterwards). Here's the basic outfit and actual tartan that we'll be wearing. It's modeled by one of my groomsmen (who already owns the tartan kilt):

oh, I did not mean to impy that weathered could not be worn formally, I was only trying to get my point across of what type of use I would most likely be wearing one. I will probably wear it as formal attire from time to time. The 2 Macraes i currently have are heavy weight and i am limited on my uses/seasons with them also they were both very Pricey. When I said traditional, i only meant not in the lines of contemporary (ie utili, etc). I had noticed the weathered swatch on USAs site and wanted direction, suggestions on weight/yardage. Thanks for the input, I think i may go with the 13oz 5 yard.

That's the bueaty of a nice wool kilt... you can dress it UP with a jacket and vest or DOWN with Tshirts and boots! It's probably one of the most versatile garments there are!
