| | | Black Watch Kilt from 1914-15
I had a gentleman come into my shop with the Kilt used by his Great Uncle during the Great War.
So far, this is the oldest documentable Kilt I have ever had the pleasure to work on.
The Kilt was in magnificent condition. All it needed was a cleaning and re-pressing.
Please note the two Strap arrangement and the 4" rise.
Interestingly the Kilt appears to be designed to be worn with the straps on the hips.

I'd be willing to bet that the strap is intended for the waist and the rise is 4" above the waist. Is there any type of fastener at the top of the rise?

turpin,
I checked everything on this Kilt and how it was designed to fit.
I looked at the relationship of the Drop to the Fell and to get the Fell to be in the proper place the strap must go down on the Hips.
The two straps are the only fasteners on the Kilt.
The guy who is wearing the Kilt is pretty close to the same size as the original owner based on photos. Perhaps a little large around the Hips.
But from the Military Records I was shown the height is within 1/2".
The way we were able to date the Kilt was from the same Military records. The Officer died in Jan of 1916 at the front. He joined the regiment that wore the Black Watch in 1914.
Inside the Kilt is a hand-written tag stating that the Kilt was made in London, but no date or other information.
So this was not a Regimentally made Kilt. It was a private purchase.
From the stitching and condition of the Kilt it is plain that this was probably a Parade Kilt and not purchased to be worn in the field.
I also noted that the Steeking is visible as a "Panty Line" just like my Kilts.

What a find and amazing condition. I thought I was lucky to be able to pick up a 1956 Hodden Grey that was never issued and only wore about three times for $40. Luckily it has the tag inside with all the pertinent manufacturing data and measurements.

Did it smell like cedar? It appears to be well-taken-care-of, and must have been in a dark place all this time. Congrats on getting to work on this piece of history.
