Steve is planning on offering a vest, so I thought I would share my idea for a casual summertime vest for kilt wearers.

It would be a modern style vest with 4 buttons down the front, a V-shaped neck and no collar. It should be made of a reasonably lightweight material so those of us who live in the southern US won't get heat stroke. The most useful part of this vest would be 2 combination cargo/slash pockets on the outer front.

The pockets would be constructed by sewing the tops, bottoms and inner sides of the cargo pockets onto the body of the vest. The outer sides would only be partly sewn down, leaving an opening for the slash pockets.

This type of pockets would give the traditional kilt wearer a place to put their hands and eliminate the need for a sporran. The vest would also eliminate the need to wear a belt.

So, what do you think? Is this a good idea or not?

A utility vest is typically very baggy and has way too many pockets. Think of a biker's vest (but not made of leather) with 2 cargo pockets on the front.

I think it could be interesting. I just don't see myself using the pockets as a replacement for a sporran though.

I am looking forward to Steve's vest when it is released but I'm more a fan of the classic vest style that will maintain the very clean and crisp lines of the out fit. I know Ron is a fan of vests in lieu of sporran but I would rather keep the sporran and have a couple of slit pockets for minor items if any. To me they would be more cosmetic to break up the front panel of the vest.

i really like those vests Cavscout. I agree that they should be slightly more fitted though. However I'm not to keen on the slit pocket with the flap above. Either or, but the two types together seems sorta redundant.

I agree, either / or. I'd actually lean more toward keeping the slit pocket though and make it a horizontal slit rather than diagonal. And maybe add one (or two, but not my preference i think) small slit pockets on the upper chest.

I'm also leaning toward a mostly solid color vest, not a tweed or herringbone. I like a tweed or patterned jacket with a solid vest. Now by "solid" i mean no patterns like herringbone but the "heather grey" and "Charcoal" shown there are acceptable.

This is something I'd wear/ It would look great alone or with a day jacket in cooler weather.

option - insulated lining for cool weather that detaches (zipper or button) for summer.
