The general shape of the vest I was thinking of is like the one in the picture that Cavscout provided in this thread. However, as Cavscout suggested, the vest should fit closer to the body like the vest of a suit.

Now to explain the combination pockets better. The front part of the combo would be a cargo or patch type pocket consisting of 2 pieces of material that serve as the front and back walls of the cargo pocket. The back part of the combo would be a slash type pocket. Its front wall would be the back of the cargo pocket and its back wall would be the body of the vest.

To construct the combo pocket the back wall of the cargo pocket would be sewn to the front of the vest as indicated by the red lines in the below picture. The area without the red line would be the opening for the slash pocket behind the cargo pocket.

I hope this helps clarify things.

I own the Frontier vest in black, and wear it both casually and formally. (It came with copper colored buttons but I replaced them with pewter so I could wear it with my Argyle jacket, as I am in the picture below).


I bought it in black specifically so I'd have the option of going formal, but it works just great as a casual vest as well. My only minor gripe is that it is a pretty heavy canvas, and is lined, which isn't a bad thing except for in the summer it gets a bit warm. I wouldn't mind something from a lighter fabric.

I too have been looking for a sleeveless jacket with pockets. The fashion dictators have decided that they are passé, it seems, for there is nothing to be had in the shops. I had a good light-weight one with pockets galore, but managed to lose it one day last year, when I took it on a bus ride (pockets empty, as it happens) just in case.

The "vests" pictured look quite good; where do they come from?

I LOVE vests as an option to sporrans!

It is VERY hard to find vests with enough pockets without looking like a travel vest or a fishing vest..

The World NEEDS a vest designed to hold the goods a sporran would, with pockets on the INSIDE for security, not just the outside.

I just laid out $298 for this lambskin leather RAF vest from Orvis and I love it. But there are no inside pockets. Might try to figure a way to add some. But the four pockets are large enough to hold my stuff in lieu of a sporran.

I also have a lighter weight cloth vest from Filson that has more pockets than I could possibly use that also works in lieu of a sporran. Was lucky enough to find it on sale down in Flagstaff in my size. That in itself was a miracle and I took that to mean I should buy it.

One of the problems with the fishing vests and the travel vests is they're almost ALL in shades of khaki, brown, or greens. Can't find black vests.

Have a couple Carhardt vests I've used too but they're fleece lined for winter, for physical work and don't dress up well, and are in the usual brown and green shades.

There is for sure a market in my world for a casual to dressy vest designed to be worn with kilts that has inside secure pockets as well as outside pockets.

My biggest turn-off about the patch pockets on the vest is they break up the clean appearance of the rest of the outfit. For a hike in the woods, sure but as a vest to wear to the office as casual or to a casual dinner party, the "utility "style vest just isn't what I'd wear.

I like how sporrans look, but I can't stand wearing them. The strap and sporran keep going under my gut, bunching the kilt and ruining the hang. I have to constantly adjust it.

The thing is, even if wearing a vest, a traditional kilt looks incomplete without the sporran. At least with a vest I can forgo the belt.
