Preview of The DaVinci Code Tartan

As some of you may remember, one of our members had purchased some of the Da Vinci Code Tartan while on a trip to Scotland and was looking for a Kiltmaker to make his Kilt in exchange for the rest of the bolt.

I think that this Tartan is truly unique. It was designed by Brian Wilton of the Scottish Tartans Authority and is, I believe, the only Tartan that is asymmetrical by having only one line offset in an otherwise symmetrical pattern. The Tartan is registered as ITI 6838.

So, here is the Kilt.

First is a front shot. You can see the Gold line that is offset in the pattern. Brian says he offset the line using the "Golden Mean".

I had to use flash to take these pictures and it really made the blue pop out. The true colors are very muted and the overall look is brown.
Here is a shot without flash to show a better representation of the true colors.

Now a shot is the back of the Kilt. It is pleated to the Sett but notice how the pattern had to be offset sthe same amount as the offset of the Gold line. It was a true pain pleating this Tartan.

Here is a side shot showing the Double Fringe which just covers the Side Slash Pockets.

Wow, thanks for posting the pics. Pleating that to the-- "off-sett" I guess-- must have been trying.

That is a handsome tartan, and a handsome kilt made from it!

I absolutely love this tartan. Brilliant colours (or not so brilliant depending upon which way you look at it I guess!). And so great to see your work mate! I love that you incorporate pockets into the kilt... very functional AND stylish! Bravo!

That is really nice. I'm not sure I want to try pleating quite like that, however, so I don't think I'm going to be getting any of that tartan any time soon.

Looks nice, though.

Nice looking tartan, and of course kilt looks great. How heavy is the material?

The fact that the tartan is assymetrical wouldn't make pleating to the sett any more or less tricky. The same principles apply in construction. There are all kinds of assymetrical tartans -- Buchanan, Hunting Stewart, Campbell of Argyle readily spring to mind.

Quite a handsome tartan. I guess this is one for the conspiracy theorists out there.
