    long kilt (?)

Well now chaps, here in England the thermometer has certainly gone waaaay down and there's been frost on the ground for several mornings. I have a thick kilt but its still blue knees time.

Now I remember seeing a picture of a fellow in a long kilt (can't remember where now) and it occurred to me that this would be excellent for winter wear.

Have any of you seen such a garment and what are your views on a long kilt (say calf length or even ankle length)?

Trouble is anything which goes below the knee is likely to be seen as a dress.

    Wear longer socks

This is going to be a very subjective thread.

I feel once it drops below the knee it is too long and is to much like a womens kilted skirt.

    Below the knees!

I agree that southern England has turned cold these last few days! I would reccomend thick/long hose and maybe underwear (just waiting for a response from Regimental HQ!). Mono.

    Long Kilts

YES !! i just saw a long kilt this last weekend at the Richmond Scottish/celtic fair..
it was on one of the drummers in the band Albannach.
a mid calved kilt, i'm not sure what tartan..but it looked good, just different..
as for it not being traditional..
well, most of what we think is traditional in kilt wear actually comes from the english adoption of the scottish wear in the Victorian age, making up their own new rules and including extras that fit the purses of the gentry that had found a new trend...
i think the long kilts look good..but then it's a young, mod, punk, goth, rebellion thing ( OMG, rebelling while wearing a kilt !!!?? what will come next?)
so, everthing new starches some peoples pleats... i think it looks fine, different but nice, i couldn't wear it..BUT then, my kilts don't make me handsomer, or thinner,or younger..(darn) BUT i wear them anyways..
if you want a long one, try it..
i'm sure on a chilly day, my ancesters let em hang low..there were not many tarten cops about back then saying no...

NNNOOOOOOO!!! Please no....I've finally got people to see a kilt as a kilt and not a skirt....I vote for the longer, warmer sock instead.

It's certainly outside the traditional definition of "kilt".

This is an idea that will certainly find support from those primarily interested in "fashion freedom" and will no doubt be shunned by the dedicated traditionalists.

Warm or not, I personally don't think it looks right on men. I've said it many times.... If it's too cold for a kilt, then wear trousers.

I'm with Gil on this one. Remember the "rules" of kilt length are just fashion rules. If it works for you there is no wrong. Just for example (since I don't think this is the look you are going for), Howie at 21st Century Kilts has a ankle-length kilt, its not for me, but I'm not going to bad talk someone who wears one. Lots of people wear Utilikilts on the long-side, and they still look plenty masculine to my eye.

    Best regards,

    Jake

I would not personally do it. My friend Tim wears his kilts long and it does make it look like he is wearing a dress. Don't do it my friend.

Friends don't let thier friends wear long kilts.....er...... dresses.
