In drinking so much of the Old Pulteney 12, Allen, you're on a grand mission - if you manage to order enough cases, North Carolina's ABC may begin stocking it regularly!

Just shared some Singleton 12 year old with some of my Chaplain friends. Running low, I need to get out and pick up some mid range single malts.

Allen: I just drained (actually sipped) a dram of Glengoyne 17 while watching one of my favorite episodes of MOTG - the one featuring Lagganmore Peculiar 30-yr.

It was another hot July day here, and silly me went for a 3 mile run during the heat of the day. So this evening, I had a frozen Mojito. Any of you boat drink drinkers that want my secret recipe, PM me. Anyway, then I opened a magnum (1.75 Liters) of VAT 69 GOLD BLENDED SCOTCH WHISKY. A light, golden color -- a smell of oak and vanilla -- a surprisingly smooth, sweet, vanilla taste, with a mild burn from start to finish. Modestly priced, this is a diamond in the rough.

We finally found it, @ASinclair. One of the larger liquor stores in our area stocks it regularly.

Tonight, a wee dram of Laphroaig 10 that I just bought. A bit smoky but not as peaty as I thought it would be.

So Islay Mist 8 is way better than it has any right to be. It is a blend of 8 year old Laphroaig with some unnamed grain whiskies and Speysides. It is peaty but not overly so and the sweetness of the grain and speyside balance the bite and smokeyness of the young Islay malt exceptionally well. The nose has notes of sea salt, pine, smoke and a little sandalwood. The palate is buttery and smooth with notes of cinnamon, menthol, peat, salted toffee, nutmeg and oak. The finish is robust on the swallow but not harsh. It quickly mellows to leave a lingering flavour of caramel, pepper corns and a hint of charcoal. The finish has a nice length.

This does not have the corn syrup-like sweetness of a grain whisky, nor does it have the blaring peatiness of Laphroaig or Bowmore. It is exceptionally well balanced.

This is an affordable dram but is the alchemy of a gifted master blender. It would be a great whisky to introduce someone to the Islay malts without scaring them off but one need not be an Islay neophyte to enjoy this whisky.

At $38 Canadian, it leaves no room for disappointment. Seriously.

P.S. I have no relationship to Islay Mist. Just impressed.

I've not had that, but it sounds lovely. I really like the blends, like The Black Grouse, that include a bit of peat monster in the mix.

Tonight, I've gotten into the Old Pulteney 12 again, but only a wee dram. int: Slainte mhath!
