| | | Balmoral Bow Help
I have a balmoral that I have removed the back ribbon from.
How do you tie the bow? I have been married for umteen years and don't want the ribbons hanging down the back of the neck. Can anyone show me the type of bow that should be tied on the back of the balmoral?

I have heard that you tie them much like a bowtie, however I was unable to find a photo. The ribbons on my Balmoral are just hanging.

Tying it like a bow tie is identical to tying it like your shoelaces except you have to pay attention to keeping the flat surfaces of the ribbon flat where they show, so that the whole shebang should be relatively flat except for the knot itself. If you really want it like a bow tie you can pull the bows out so that the free ribbon tails are the same length as the folded over bows.
Please post a pic when you get it the way you like it for those of us who have never seen or tried it that way ourselves. Good luck.

According to Scotweb's product listing, "In army tradition, Lowlanders (Scots from south of the Highlands) let the ribbons hang free whilst Highlanders would tie them in a bow." Their illustrations show them hanging free. Another vendor (hey, I looked at forum advertisers first) does show a bowed version here. Click to enlarge the photo and you'll see a very flat bow-tie style bow with the "wings" spread wide. Looks as if it has been pressed or even tacked down to keep it flat to the bonnet.

Can't help you with a picture right now, but as mentioned, just tie it like a shoe lace, keeping things flat. Then when you like the look, take a needle and thread and put a couple of stitches through the knot to hold it. Otherwise it won't stay tied too well. (Voice of experience)

This is fuzzy but i think it will give the idea. This may not be the "traditional" way but it is the way I've tied by my strings for over 30 years.

This is what Matt Newsome has to say on the subject "One minor word about the bonnet. No matter if you are wearing a balmoral or a glengarry, the ribbons should be centered in the back, with the hat cocked ever-so-slightly to the right, highlighting your crest badge. On the balmoral, it is customary to wear the ribbons tied into a bow. (This is a remnant of the old broad bonnets that were sized with a draw-string). With a glengarry, the ribbons are left loose."

Here is what I did:
Remove the ribbon from the balmoral.
I tied the ribbon into a bow using a bow-tie knot.
I then cut off the excess.
Sewed the bow onto the balmoral.
Here are the pics:
