Braided Leather Sporran Strap

Looks great! Much more befitiing the sporran.

Another trick is to bevel all the edges after cutting, finish, and then braid. The beveling is only possible or useful on some types of leather but finishing all the edges, though tedious, will make the finished strap lay neater and look smooth and broken in.

Thanks for answering that Turpin. I use beeswax when I am not in a hurry. I usually just dye the edges, wipe them a few times to keep them from rubbing off on clothing, and let them shine up naturally.

Thanks for sharing that with us O'Neille.

I'll have to give that a try sometime. I have some commercially produced braided belts that I wear wth my sporrans. I find them very comfortable because they give a little when you move around and they adjust themselves to your position.

You just brought back memories of summer camp, many, many years ago. We would make belts like that for everything. The way I learned was hands on, and I have seen this technique illustrated in books, but the video is, by far, better than the printed paper version.

I remember doing a saddle with braided latigo strapping on almost everything. It was really gaudy. I wonder what happened to that?

There are several ways. , , . glycerine soap or a piece of beeswax , , , gum tragacanth . . .

A waterproofing grease (e.g., Sno-Pruf or mink oil) applied sparingly works well on many leathers. Top grain cowhide needs only a little water, applied with a damp cloth.

The only trick to this is, whatever you use, use it sparingly.
