DIY Showroom This is the place to post for those that have Done It Yourselves. It makes no difference if it is a kilt, a jacket, a sporran, a dirk or a targe - if you did it by yourself, for yourself, post it here.

a challenge from my kiltmaker

A couple of months ago the Mrs. and I took a day trip to the Tartans Museum to visit with Matt Newsome and to show him how I wanted my Carolina box-pleats to be done. While there Matt commented on how I've worn red hose just about every time we've seen each other. I took that as a challenge and since then I have produced these:

The color is pretty accurate (at least on my monitor). The yarn is variegated with grey, brown, tan, almost-white and every shade in between. It's sock-weight worked on size 1 square DPNs.
I've never seen hose like these, and am very pleased with how they turned out. I chose to debut them to the world alongside the MacDougall kilt I bought from Matt on the aforementioned trip, and the sporran that Tom (A-Hay!) made for me, thusly:

Here they are a little closer, with the cuff turned up and showing the non-trad garter ties I made:

I used red and brown 3/8" ribbon with brown wooden beads and shiny metal (aluminum, I guess) Celtic crosses to make these ties. I got the idea from someone else here a few months ago.
The ties by themselves:

And just for the fun of it, here's my second-favorite walking stick. The red "eye" is a glass blob I Super-Glued on:

I hope you've enjoyed this walk through my closet. Hopefully there will be more installments.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled program.

Nice outfit, thank for the photos, really nice hose by the way.

Very cool garter ties, lots of possibilities along those lines! And the hose are beautiful, holy cow, size 1 DPNs? I am still working on a pair using Size 5s and it is taking for-freaking-ever...

I do wonder if the ties, at that length, swirl and clang about a bit when striding? But overall a very nice outfit with well-chosen accessories.

Yep. Size 1s. Mary at the yarn shop thinks I'm crazy, too.
Yep. 'They do "swirl and clang about," and I kind of like it. They're different, but not too outrageous.
Thanks for the compliments. I'm looking forward to seeing the hose you're finishing.
