This is often accomplished by pleating to the stripe of some tartans. You end up with all light colours on the outside, and all dark on the inside, or vice versa. It looks really cool as you walk. Here's an example of the Antarctic tartan, made by Barb:

I just saw this post i have been slowly working on a similar project I have been taking all my left over material from every kilt i have made and I'm making a patch work kilt.
