    Lightbulb different thought for jacket

Me again, I had yet another thought, can't be good for me I'm sure, like several others here, I'm looking for a cheap yet respectably, splendiferous jacket. How about a mess jacket? What d'ya think boys and girls? They've got some beauts on E-Bay, unfortunately mainly for little geezers, and for those looking for Prince Charlie buttons, Avance do them, or try and pick up a raggyarsed jacket cheaply, just for its buttons, the light's gone dim now

What does a mess jacket look like? I don't think I've seen one.

    Mess jackets

I have a couple of mess jackets that work well as kilt jackets.

A word of caution: you might not want to get a light colored or white one with insignia or braid at the cuff, etc, ---unless you want to wear it with the insigniae, etc----since when removed it may show where the stitching was.

I got a very inexpensive white one that am thinking of tie dying.

Aren't we really talking the "Eaton" jacket again? Like a waiter's jacket?

Several members have done that, and with good results.

    J. Charles Thompson (in "So You Going to Wear the Kilt") SPECIFICALLY names the "mess jacket" as a GREAT base for a kilt jacket conversion.

I would think that would be a great base for a conversion. It would probably be tailored closer than a sport coat and would already be shortened (I think). You would probably just have to round it out for the sporran.

I ended up with a retired tuxedo rental jacket that they referred to as a "waist jacket". To make it even more funner...it had a label in it proclaiming that it was from the "Robert Wagner Collection". That might be enough info to start beating the bushes at tux companies to see if they have anything that they want to part with.

I just picked up a tailcoat from a company on eBay that sells ex-rentals. I'll have the tails removed, and be on my merry way...

They look like this and come in many different colours.

I think it would look pretty good.

I think something like this with the buttons changed to silver buttons and with the gold on the cuffs dyed to black would look fantastic.
