I just took a short little jaunt across town to Denver Fabrics. "No big deal," I thought, "Just a few yards of fabric and some needles for the machine." Delusional, I was. Almost $200 later, I left with a lot of "notions," 8 yards of a very heavy black bull denim, 5 1/4 of a dark indigo denim (both fairly heavy and will hang beautifully, and 10 yards of a poly/ rayon fabric in a tartan that I have yet to identify. (I'll post a pic in the heraldry and tartans section, but I'm pretty sure it's just a generic.) The tartan material, unfortunately is very light. It does, however, have a kilting selvedge. I think that it will make a couple of really nice lightweight summer kilts. Also, my wife likes the job I've done on my kilts so much that included in my purchases ended up being fabric to make a skirt for her. I have a hell of a lot of sewing to do.

BTW- those of you wanting a good source for fairly inexpensive bull denim, denverfabrics.com is their online store.

I don't sew. I let the masters take care of my kilting needs. BUT, I must agree, fabric stores are CERTAINLY dangerous places. My wife sews all sorts of home furnishings (curtains, drapes, chair cushions, Winston beds... etc.) "CHA CHING!"

I love the fabric stores, so silly me agreed to head down to the LA garment district with a couple friends. I have a shopping list a mile long, and am not really sure how I'm getting to all home, but I am getting near to 200 dollars worth of fabric for everything from bellydance ghawazees, to victorian dress and corsets, to wool for a cloak for my 2 year old. That's not even everything I am buying for. Hubby might get a casual kilt if he doesn't tick me off;)

As you wish, Dread. Some picts for the picts! And yes, there really is fabric in that last one, but it eats light like my wife eats chocolate. I'm gonna love having a kilt that black.

My wife has put a hold on me for now, mainly because I'm starting to stack it up faster than I can sew it. But that last delivery from Denver Fabrics sure is going to make a pretty kilt!!!

For lack of a better word I call these things pseudo-tartans. I'm pretty sure this is nothing official (although the last unknown tartan I bought turned out to be a Black Stewart).
I don't know. I just know it's gorgeous fabric, with a REALLY nice feel. It's advertized as wool but I can't tell if its 100% or a blend.
Anyway, I think it will look great as a kilt and will look good with my black kilt jacket.
You can find good stuff on the internet if you are patient. I go to several fabric store links and search on "wool plaid". Sometimes I get lucky.
Denver fabrics is a regular search.

Sounds like a pretty good haul, though. I've got more projects for my wife than for myself at the moment, but I think I have more fun making things for her
