FINISHED!! My first Box Pleat!!
Hey y'all-
I decided to go with a box pleat with the 18OZ Peebles Co. MacKenzie material, since I would NEVER be able to wear a tank made of this material year round. I used the box pleat supplement to TAoKM along with my MNBP as a template of sorts. Finished product is....a little rough in areas (Especially the trim...gotta work on that, the fitting is a little off in the waist, and the kilt is 26 inches in length and I'm a 25 , so i had to put an extra buckle on as wll as 2 belt loops-You can see them in the pic-They make the stripe look like its curving on 2 of the stripes on the fell). Everything else worked out fine. Had to use the machine at times, but all-n-all, very proud and I'm gonna wear it today. Here are the pics (Don't cringe Matt)-

Congratulations! How soon are you starting on #2?
.
The obscure we see eventually. The completely obvious, it seems, takes longer.

Congratulations wear it well.

# 2 is going to be a MAcGregor knife pleat for my 2 year old daughter Skye. I bought an unopened box "ScotchCo." of 3 yards of material from 1957!!!! Still folded and clean as a whistle!! Paid 8$ + 12$ shipping!! I think it may be 16oz!!
After that, I'll do another box pleat for someone.....Gotta try a knife pleat this time...Seems like a good start to do a small one! i'll post more pics as I finish. thanks guys!!!

I would like to add that kilt making is like a zen exercise. I've hardly ever sewn in my life, or used a machine. The book TAoKM is daunting as well, but with each xkilt and hour spent doing this, i would learn something. I also note that I'm getting better with each one.....i encourage everyone to try it!

I agree the more you do it the better it gets. I'm working on an 8 yard knife pleat in Black Watch for myself. The first couple of pleats were rough going but now I'm definitely getting the hang of it!
Keep up the good work!

I totally agree that there is a Zen-ness about kilt making.
I wondered if you could effectively shorten the kilt by creating a 1 inch rise - the top buckle would then be lower down on the kilt, but would still be at the waist when worn.
It might be more trouble than it is worth now - only you know what is under the lining, but it would resolve the problem of the extra length.
It's a nice looking kilt, though, and I like the tartan's white square within a red square arangement of stripes.
