First Attempt

So I got bit by the bug and after hours of looking at the fine work posted by other X-marks members, I decided to try my hand at a sgian.

I haven't fixed the blade to the handle, as I'm not quite happy with everything yet. But I thought I'd post a mock-up pic to get some feedback.

The blade is Damascus steel that I found on eBay and the handle is rosewood. Working with all hand tools on my back porch so far. Don't have room to start setting up a shop.

Comments and criticism are invited.

Sorry about the poor cellphone-image quality. Still trying to find the power/data cable for the digital camera

I didn't end up fixing the blade to this particular handle, but wanted to experiment a little more. I added a piece of bone, filed some lines into the handle and epoxied a bottle opener in for a sgian don't. Bottle/paint-can openers are free at Lowe's so I didn't have to worry about ruining it if I messed up.

For your viewing amusement...
(still haven't come up with that data cable)

I tried it out in the boot top, but the bottle opener part hit right at my ankle bone. Not exactly the most comfortable thing for walking around.

Thanks for all the encouragement guys! Once I get a handle I like enough, I'll get it married up to the blade and maybe try my hand at some pewter work....
