Grey Kilt Socks
Bought a pack of three kilt socks from Hamilton Dry Goods recently - one pair black, one red, one white. I've always wanted a grey pair, so thought I would try dying the white pair.
Hand washed the socks first, then mixed up a pack of Rit black dye in 2 cups boiling water. Heated up 1 1/2 gallons of water in a stainless steel pot with one cup salt. Added about 1/2 the dye mix to the hot water and then added the socks. Kept them in the dye mix for about five minutes, stirring regularly and watched the color develop in the socks. Took them out when they appeared to be a dark grey, then rinsed multiple times until all the dye was out. Washed once more and dried.
Here's the final look:

Did you have to email them in regards to the available colors? I have one pair of their socks, but they're not this style with the patterns in them. What are they called on the site? And how are they in thickness? Are they "sheer"? Or are they pretty substantial? They look substantial, but hard to tell not being on a leg.

Got these from their eBay site, which I have used before. They seem to sell them in groups of two or three pairs. They are cotton but reasonably substantial. Length seems to vary somewhat, I have one pair of navy that are so long I have to turn the top twice, but it gives a very good look as a result.

The kilt socks listed on their regular website are brown, gray, and natural/off-white.
The cable-knit kilt socks are available only through their eBay store, and come in red, blue, gray, brown, and white, depending on what they have in stock. I have at least one pair in each of the first four colors.
I am easily moved for sympathy for dogs, far more so than for humans, because dogs do not understand. There is no way to explain that you will return, that the vet will make it all better, that they cannot go shooting today because that is not what today is about. They cannot work out that their misery is finite and will some time end, and so their misery is magnified.

I'm waiting to hear back from them on what they have in stock in those. I'm very interested. I just don't want to buy a three pack on Ebay, as I have NO use for a red pair! The red kilt I have is in the ancient coloring, and I don't have any tartans with even a red tram line since I sold the Gunn USAK casual. I'd like to have a pair or two in each of the other colors though.

You guys have me all craving a pare... or two of gray kilt hose. Right now I just have a couple of grey knee-highs for casual dress. But then I would end up having to get a bunch of other stuff.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Actually, it's a bamboo counter top! But it is made from bamboo flooring laid on plywood.
