    Happy Father's Sgain!

Hi Dad, et all. (As always, our host is slow. Please hit refresh if you do not see images.)

The gag gift on the kitchen table was meant to represent these:

...in comparison with the willowy blade from Windlass.

I commissioned these for the Kinney men from Jason Gustafson, a local artisan. They're made from A2 steel, treated to Rockwell 58-60, from 1/8" thick blanks, with a flat grind. These are serious tools. Pick you handle scales now (1/4" holes), and get ready to tinker! See you in New Orleans with these new Sgain Dubhiously's.

Since we'll be gathering as a clan this week, I'll even throw in some semi-dress sporrans. One for you, one for the elder Kinney brother, and one for me. These are made from the Sealskin coat I parted out to the other XMTS members. I need only wait for the antler buttons to dry, then I'll complete them. For now I'm keeping them on a high shelf.

Update- Finished with antler crown buttons and matching braided leather belts.

    Love,

    Kevin

Talking Thank you kind young Father

    I'm overwhelmed Kevin,

Thank you and a most Happy Fathers Day to you as well! Beautiful looking blades by Mr. Gustafson. I look forward to the project this will become. Maybe mastodons tusk scales. Please thank young Alex for the kind Happy Grandfathers' Day wish as well. Hope you have a terrific day at the pool and dinner. We look forward to the gathering of the Clan in the Big Easy for Kim and Mike's nuptials.

And yes it does look like Jack would like that sporran as the ultimate Chew Toy!

    With love,

    Dad (New Sgian Dude)

    Well Panache....

You need only encourage Sinbad to spend a few introverted decades in a shop, and....

Very nice, Kevin. I have a bar of steel in the shop that will become some new blades very soon, and I really like the shape of your blades. You're right, lots of the sgian blanks I've seen are mighty slight.

I really like the construction of the sporrans, too. Very nice work.

    Hello All,

I don't know how the three blades are progressing in the hands of my father, but my utility version is coming along nicely.

Here it is in comparison with a Windlass Sgain (Soaked in dye, eww), and my bush knife.

I'll work the Micarta of thehandle with some finer sandpaper, then polish it up.

    Cheers,

Nice all around! I especially love the top knife. It looks like a Breeden bushcrafter.

    Here's the finished piece.

I'll mold a sheath next week, and build a harness to keep it from sliding down my hose into my shoe.
