    Latest commision

    Hi all,

Got this far enough along that I think it will come out all right. This being the second attempt. First one's file work didn't turn out all that good.

Starting off with some of Devin Thomas's stainless banded ladder damascus -

Add into this some stabilized bog oak -

This is the first piece of damascus but it shows the piece laid out -

    Trimmed out and drilled -

Fitted with the bolsters and slabbed bog oak -

I have to finish the sides of the handle material to keep the file work intact -

I cook with a flair for the dramatic,
    and depraved indifference to calories

Got the file work laid out. This one is getting file work all the way wrapped around the handle -

    The first pass -

    Second pass -

    The third pass -

Cleaned up. Just three simple steps to a vine and thorns file work -

The butt end. I played around here and planned it out so it look like two vines meeting -

After heat treat and etching. Did a new technique here. First deep etched in muriatic acid and than followed up with a dip in ferric chloric to bring out the contrast. Turned out the best that I've ever gotten -

Next will be the handle and sheath, with a lot of luck.

I was reading along, amazed as usual, yeah, yeah, stunning as always, even if I got myself up and in the shop it would never look a quarter that good, but seeing it, I ought to. THEN I got to the thorns picture and Nighthawk's emoticon's were a picture of my face. That's just not possible. I've handled files, I'm competent with tools, but that's just not possible. There are no more words. Stunning, awesome, stupendous, we've used them before. As you say, though this goes beyond. I've just used 1500 hundred words to say I have no words, and it's NOT EVEN FINISHED YET!!!

"Just three simple steps to a vine and thorns file work. . ."

Reminds me of the Far Side cartoon where the scientist is standing at a chalkboard filled with an esoteric calculation. About the middle of the calculation is a part that reads "and here the magic happens!"

    Definitely magic. Stupendously beautiful magic!

Just that and the dreaded P & D words, practice and destroy. Lots of destroy. Just "destroyed" up $100 of damascus in "practice" on the first time with this blade.

Just for the record, that was sarcasm on my part. That is the way the video first covered it. "Yah right!" was my first thought.
