    On my semi-trad tartan'd kilt I used webbing and d-ring on the inner flap for ease of sewing attachment and adjustability and a conventional leather fixture on the outer. Since the inner's hidden (unless you're showing someone how you made it or they're checking what ya' wear under your kiltie) I figured it didn't matter much.

    I guess if the width of the belt is wide enough it would look fine. I would probably opt for the old-style military web belt in OD green or black depending on the kilt finish as they are 2 1/2 inches wide and would look great with a rugged looking kilt.
