Shriner do a search on sewing machines and you will get a lot of opinions. It seems to me that the most consistant position is that an old machine with as many metal parts as possible and zig-zag stitch is best. Look on Ebay for used machines and talk to your local sewing machine repair shop for suggestions.

If you want to go ultra cheap, look on ebay.

I recently bought a perfectly workable...no bells and whistles, but it works fine...sewing machine for $19.99 plus about $20 shipping.

all you REALLY need is a machine that sews straight stitch and zig-zag and will reverse-stitch. If it'll do buttonholes, that's great.
