    Maple Leaf Kilt Pin

In my other kilt pin thread, someone suggested I make a maple leaf kilt pin, so I thought I'd take a shot at it.

It measures roughly 3"x3", and is held on with magnets, like the oak leaf pin.

Very nice indeed. Might I add that with the use of an analin dye one could make a green leaf or a red one yet still allow the grain to show through should they so desire.

Yes, but much more interesting to use woods with naturally reddish, or other tones (I just have to order them). I have some purple heart, but I need it for a sgain dubh I'm putting together right now.

That is nice, I agree let beauty of the wood show through.

Staying true to form (having used Poplar for your oak leaf kilt pin), I see you used oak for your maple leaf!

If you're looking for a really inexpensive way to get smaller pieces of exotic woods, check out the ebay seller, "Chitswood". He actually lives just a few blocks away from me (which is great, per no shipping on the wood).

If the purple heart you have would work for the leaf design, then I can send you purple heart or red heart blocks to cut up for your sgian dubh. Free. Well, I'm pretty sure I have purple heart. I know I have a whole UPS shipping box full of red heart blocks and some of them would probably work out quite well for a sgian dubh handle blank.

Just a warning, red heart stinks when you cut it...

I have quite a few smaller pieces of wood laying around that would make good sgian dubh handles, as well. I'd happily send you some machiche to play around with.

I use quite a bit of purple heart, so I'm used to working with it. I'll check out chitswood, though. Thanks!

Cutting and shaping took about an hour. Finishing depends on what sort of finish I use, how many coats, how long to dry, etc.

I'm seriously considering it. I'd need to build up some stock.
